Walsh's films unfold in a light that continues to spread from a past to whose glory Walsh pays tribute, at the same time as he expresses sorrow at its passing. The Strawberry Blonde, a film on rupture and sacrifice, offers a key to Walsh's work. Whereas the Westerns and crime thrillers for which Walsh is best known appear (on the surface) to define their heroes in terms of external, physical action, The Strawberry Blonde locates heroism in the acceptance of the conditions of everyday life. In so doing, it becomes a film on continuity as much as on loss.
