Douglas Sirk is the great director of the social mask, of the irremediable, and of the process by which the comforts of affluence and of a seemingly stable social system become a prison. Criticizing mass culture as an "imitation of life," a commercialized circuit of fake experiences, Sirk asks: where can the individual find a place within this spectacle? Where can an authentic encounter with the self be staged? Sirk also builds a spatial model of time relations in which characters become images of one another's pasts and futures.

ダグラス・サークは社会的な仮面をめぐる偉大な映画監督であり、取り返しのつかない事柄を見せ、そのなかで裕福で快適であり安定しているかに見える社会制度を牢獄に転じていく。大衆文化を「人生の模倣（『悲しみは空の彼方に』の原題）」、偽りの体験を与える商業化された制度と鋭く批評することから、サークはこう問いかける。個人がこの見せ物のなかにどうやって居場所を見いだせるのか？　自分自身の真実との出会いを果たして演じられるのだろうか？　サークはまた時間の関係をめぐる空間的なモデルを創出する監督であり、そのなかで登場人物は他者の過去や未来のイメージとなる。
